Patterns reveal useful data about our world
Author: Jeannye
I intend to the best of my ability, to design with honesty and respect for nature. It is my desire to explore the ideas of various materials and the resultant details and connections. Having a love for sunlight, I will incorporate daylight generously. In the most pragmatic manner, an element's usefulness, will direct my technique, for each. Structure and geometry will hold primary roles in the generation of initial concepts and design solutions. Most important, I will discover happiness.
My Journey on a Design Competition
6:30 am Saturday 9-22
this morning I am up early on a Saturday, thrilled and excited to finally sketch for fun.
its a way to remember why I got into architecture, a return to my truest passions
what is the concept for a living building?
Add summary of the seven petals and 20 imperatives
Started learning a coding language C# to use with Rhino/Grasshopper and Revit for the creation of more useful data tools in architecture.
The abstract concept of variables, functions and methods may become clear with more examples and practice.
I am beginning to see the unstructured nature of data.
Like the many possibilities in Architectural sketches, the variety of programs are endless.
SU+RE: Sustainable + Resilient Design Systems by AD presents a compelling trend towards SYSTEMS THINKING.
High Performance Building Skins are the primary frontline boundary surface domain to explore SU+RE.
Sustainbility and Resilience are the new constraints in design.
Systems Thinking is replacing Design Thinking.
“Thinking different is the engine of creating wealth in this new economy.”
Some new parameters are:

- Everything is Connected

Reviewing the Building Inventory list of several institutions today, I began wondering if “all things really do get better over time- including buildings?”
The age of many of these facilities was simply astounding!
While reading the WELL Building Standard it’s becoming apparent that this document has merit for the older buildings.
Consider the amount of energy that’s utilized to keep these facilities occupied.
Changing fixtures and replacing windows, that is like a small bandaid on a big issue.
Does Architecture Age and Get Better over Time?
maybe not… on their own
WELL Building Design
What an amazing concept WELL Building. It’s like being able to design architecture that makes things a little better.
Most amazing fact By the Numbers, a person breathes nearly 15,000 L of air every day. That’s a really good reason to protect and maintain excellent indoor air quality!
Categorizing and Tagging elements while drawing is simply distracting.
Selecting from a known list leads to a more fluent workflow.
Its like creating passwords that are going to be forgotten moments after they have been used.
There is no graphic image to remember or recall when naming a piece of geometry.
How does this process become common and usual enough to fade into the background?
Maybe need to spend some time developing a goto list of Categories and Tags for drawing digitally.
Sorting and Filtering are powerful tools provided there are common characteristics to use.
Parametric Design is about re-use
Drawings with Words and Symbols
One of the most challenging tasks of designing in the computer is drawing with words and symbols.
Drawing by hand allows one to enter a whole new world free to create become one with the drawing tool, drawing surface and creative thoughts.
Its truly amazingly wonderful place where time stops and ideas flow!
Using the computer interface is so disjointed and obtuse. The constant jumping between words regarding digital data, organizational metrics, categorizing elements, capturing logic, establishing rules, naming geometry, and calculating units. It feels like every other moment is a leap out of the creative design world into a computer programming structured zone.
Design software needs to fade into the background, be silent.
Give design the stage back, let the lines and geometry be the actors on the canvas.
Technology has hijacked the essence of design for the sake of re-usability.
Challenge is that very little if anything at all ever gets re-used!
It’s always off to the next design idea.
The most fascinating aspect of architecture is that every design opportunity is new!
